The piston slides not only along the cylinder shaft but also at right angles to the cylinder shaft due to the force on the piston shown in Fig. 3. A
distance between the piston and cylinder was measured by four variable-inductance type displacement gages attached on the piston skirt. The glass cylinder
was replaced with an iron cylinder for measurement which has the same inner diameter of the glass cylinder. The side-to-side motion of the piston and
the deflection angle of the piston pin were determined on the basis of the measurements, and the illustration of the piston motion is shown in Fig. 4. The figure shows that the experiment was carried out on condition that the rpm was 500rpm without a load.
The side-to-side motion of the center of the piston is almost nil, and the center slides from side to side very little.
The piston rotates around the piston pin, and the piston and cylinder become parallel as the piston inclines toward the anti-thrust side at the top dead center and piston slides down. The piston slightly
inclines toward the thrust side at the crank angle of approximately 150°, however the piston and cylinder keeps almost
parallel until the piston slides down to the bottom dead center. The piston slides up parallel along the cylinder shaft until it reaches near the crank angle of 240.
The piston inclines toward the thrust side around 270°where compression pressure is applied and continues so until it reaches around 330°,
then the piston begins to incline toward the anti-thrust side, and it reaches the top dead center while increasing the inclination.
