In modern Japanese society, “symbols surrounding the deceased” are changing dramatically. To summarize the characteristics of these changes, firstly, the deceased have evolved from religious/spiritual beings to memorialized/imagined beings and secondly, the deceased have evolved from societal/collective beings to personal beings. Accordingly, the classic picture of the afterlife to which the deceased go is rapidly disappearing and this has become the focus for “memorialism”. In addition, along with these kinds of changes, customs regarding the deceased have changed to personal affairs pertaining to the individual’s personal feelings (privatization). Such phenomena, together with pushing the deterioration of the traditionally strong Japanese “household” consciousness to its final stage, have weakened the erstwhile concept of ancestors as the central ideology that supported the “household”, and have destroyed the protocol that goes along with this ideology. Further, the most remarkable of these changes to occur is the style of the grave. The traditional “household grave” has not only changed to the “family grave”, but moreover, is switching to a focus on the “individual grave”. In particular, Haruyo Inoue interprets these changes as a trend towards non-inherited graves that are not succeeded over generations or group burial graves where the deceased is buried with others to whom they do not have any blood relation becoming mainstream and taking the place of traditional family unit graves, the number of which will decrease. Further, Inoue identifies this as the result of the change in shrines for the deceased from “household shrines” to “immediate family memorialization shrines”.

Changes such as the above greatly affect the form itself of modern funerals. The proportion of traditional funerals held at temples presided over by those of religious vocation including priests, is rapidly decreasing. In urban areas it is not rare that, for example, with the name of “family funeral” and without the aid of a priest, funerals take place attended only by a small number of close relatives. Furthermore, recently “direct funerals” are on the increase. At “direct funerals”, the funeral service is dispensed with and the deceased is taken directly to the crematorium. In the suburbs of Tokyo and such areas, data exists showing that this kind of funeral counts for almost 30% of all funerals. It is clear that the secularization of customs for funerals is taking place.
As a backdrop to such trends, the citizen’s group “Association for the Promotion of Liberty in Funerals” has the philosophy of “freedom from the grave” and the position of having actively promoted the scattering of ashes in the sea or on mountains rather than a normal burial in a graveyard.
The most noticeable phenomenon brought about by the secularization of such funeral rites is the “at-hand memorial service”. However, this will be covered later.
Further, that which represents such customs for funerals lacking in religious atmosphere is probably the contents of the messages of condolence that are read at current ordinary funerals. In the typical Japanese memorial address, close friends of the deceased recite messages such as the following in front of a portrait of the deceased. ‘Now that you have been released from this world full of pain and anguish, please rest calmly and peacefully’, ‘I’ll be with you soon, please wait for me’. Accordingly, this plainly emphasizes that death is not seen as a permanent separation between people but only as a “brief separation”. In this way, endeavoring to soothe grief by re-interpreting separation by death as a “brief separation” is not necessarily a novelty.

At present, a new form of memorial service for the deceased called “At-hand memorial service” is showing convincing expansion. In this case, the ashes of the deceased are not placed in a crypt or grave as was done according to traditional conventions but are enshrined in the home providing a method for memorial at one’s fingertips.
It is true that, even in the past, there were people who intentionally did not lay the ashes of the deceased to rest after the forty-ninth day after death or the first anniversary of death, instead keeping the urn in the family Buddhist altar for a long time. Therefore, in the Kansai area that has traditionally used smaller urns, it can be said that this method is permitted and that there are no feelings of discomfort towards it. However, recently, all of a sudden, methods for “At-hand memorial” are being more frequently introduced by the media, and the foundation of thoughts on memorials is dramatically different from that of the past. This is not because the urn that should by all rights be placed in a grave or crypt is, for some reason, as a passive action, kept in the home, but it is because by keeping the ashes of the dear departed close, there is an active attempt to create a new relationship between the living and the deceased.
For example, in the July 2nd 2005 edition of The Asahi Shimbun, under the title of “Memorializing the Dear Departed At-hand ? An Exhibition of Information and Products”, an overview of the exhibition held by the Temoto-Kuyo (At-hand memorial) Association was introduced. This article explained the changes in the wishes of modern people who have accepted this form of at-hand memorial service as follows.
Pendants made from the ashes or bones of the deceased or ceramic ornaments that have the remains incorporated ――. Instead of traditional household graves or Buddhist altars, a new form of memorial, an “At-hand memorial” that commemorates the close departed, has come on to the market. Just as the main character of the hit novel “Sekai no Chuushin de Ai wo Sakebu” (“Cry out for Love at the Center of the World) that was made into a film always carried the ashes of his lover around with him, against this backdrop it seems that there are changes in thinking towards the ashes and bones of the deceased. Even existing graveyard or tombstone businesses that do not directly commercialize such at-hand memorial goods have recently actively begun the display and sale of these goods in shops and consultation centers in large cities and their surrounding areas.

Such deceased who cannot pass over into the afterlife peacefully are those who died a sudden death in wars, accidents or disasters and they have been the object of time-honored courteous requiems and memorials. Notably in Japan, there is fear that extreme calamities are caused by the souls of the politically defeated and the tradition of deifying their souls as gods in a special ceremony has been upheld. The institution of Yasukuni Shrine that was founded by the modern state as a religious facility for the war dead is also a facet of the way the nation deals with the souls that can not pass over peacefully into the afterlife.
It is common knowledge that there is much debate surrounding Yasukuni Shrine centered particularly around the visits to the shrine of the former Prime Minister Mr. Koizumi or the enshrining of class A war criminals. However, these should not be left to the monopolistic management of the religious law of a sect as is traditional but, for example, it is necessary to publicly propose a plan for a “new memorial facility” at the same time as creating a scheme whereby they are dealt with in a non-religious facility.
Again, this is not simply a problem that is limited to the rights and wrongs of dealing with the deceased at Yasukuni Shrine. Even considering this as a problem for post-war Japan, for example, how to appease the souls of those who died violently in the Japan Airlines crash (1985) or the Great Hanshin Awaji earthquake (1995) and how to keep them in memory exists as a national theme.

o, if it is said that war movies at the time were not in any sense movies that publicized national policy, of course, this is not the case. In particular after 1941 when Japan entered into the Pacific War, war movies repeatedly depict stories of youths entering army training schools and growing into fine soldiers.
The most famous movie during the war “Naval Battles of Hawaii and Malay” was released in 1942 and made the highest profits of the era. The theme of this movie is two battles; the Japanese army’s attack on Pearl Harbor and the Malay naval battle that sunk a British battleship. The movie portrays very realistic battle scenes with high-quality special effects.
The story of this movie is that of a youth who joins the navy and depicts the process of him becoming a fine soldier after undergoing strict training. Aspects of the strict training at the training school are depicted and in the end, the youth who has become a fine soldier participates in the Pearl Harbor attack and contributes to the Japanese victory.
War movies of the time focused on depicting such youth joining the army and becoming fine soldiers. Other films such as “The Navy” and “The Final Battle of the Sky” made in 1943 depicted the war using this story as their axes.
In such movies, what kind of soldier is deemed as “fine”? For example, there is a scene in “Naval Battles of Hawaii and Malay” that explains this.

The youth who is the main character is grieving for a friend who died in a training accident. A young man who is already a fine soldier talks to him. This soldier begins by saying “This is a story of when I was at naval academy…”. After this there are no more lines for a while and in a grave mood with Umi Yukaba (a Japanese army song) playing in the background, he is saying his prayers. Then he says:

I kept on praying for one year, for two years and in the 3rd year of school I sensed something all of a sudden. I wasn’t myself. I was nothing. Cleverly, I was entirely offered up for the sake of the honorable commander-in-chief. Then, I clearly understood it in my guts… that is what any Japanese person is. This is blood that has flowed in our veins for 3,000 years. This is the Japanese spirit. This is military spirit. This is the spirit of the population.

There is an explanation of why the necessity of understanding “I was nothing” here. By understanding that one is “nothing” he becomes one with “military spirit” and “the spirit of the population”. Here, a fine soldier is not a soldier who grieves death but one who personally understands that he is nothing and is a human being who can prepare himself for death. In order to indicate this, just after he has talked about this, he states: “I will soon be going into battle and this is probably the last time I will see you, so I really wanted to tell you what I have told you.”

During the war, war movies hardly depicted the objectives of war or the enemy. However, this does not mean that they were not political propaganda movies. Rather, the fact that they did not depict such things held the most important political meaning. This publicized an important message about the function of the political system under the Emperor system at that time.
Hiroshi Nakatani attempted to explain the relationship between politics and war movies during the war in his “The Essence of War Movies”. First of all, let us examine war movies and politics using the information in this thesis.

The significance of loyalty, bravery and heroism does not stem from physical hardship. It is not necessarily born of bravery in fierce aerial attacks either. The true nature of war undoubtedly cannot be formulated merely from youth and bravery, from simple strength and bravery, from mere violence and nobleness. … In other words, war is a political means in times of crisis, as worldly people know, of one country imposing its national policy on another country and working in order to secure State rights.

War never has ultimate personal objectives but is not more than a means in order to achieve the objectives of another party. For that reason, “There are certainly distinctive methods in war. However, distinctive logic does not even exist.”
For this reason, war is nothing more than a means for the inevitable execution of one country’s political or policy objectives. In other words, war cannot exist without political objectives. In addition, according to Clausewitz, politics are “only advantageous to domestic affairs and are coordinated to consolidate advantages to individual lifestyle and advantages that can be considered philosophically” and at the same time, externally, are “the spokesperson for advantages for the whole society.”
In this way, Clausewitz links the connection between war and politics as the relationships between means and objectives. It was Karl Schmidt that made the relationship between war and politics even more inseparable. Nakatani refers to Schmidt in his work mentioned in the following manner:

… Wars are clearly started by conflict between nations and therefore conflict between nations and individuals or between individuals cannot be recognized as war in the proper sense of the word. The fact that Karl Schmidt states the meaning that in war, that which is called the enemy is limited only to all public usage and that the existence of individual enmity must recognize this is also quite plausible.

In this sense, if war based on politics is classed as “political means in times of emergency” the war at that time is “opposition that cannot stand up to the true essence” and again becomes nothing more than “apolitical nature”. War again, the same as the State, is the absolute existence of prerequisites.
War objectives and hostility become obstacles when attempting to symbolize war as such an absolute. When war is depicted centering on war objectives, such wars become wars with a purpose. These are the wars that Clausewitz talks of; wars for gain. In other words, wars that are not for gain are not justified. In this sense wars are no longer absolute.
In addition, in the case of hostility, a valid means of conducting a war is the stirring up of hostilities. However, when the reason for fighting with enemies is hostility, it becomes an individual issue in deciding to fight the hated enemy. According to Schmidt, it is “citizens” who decide who are friends and who are enemies and these decisions made by the citizens themselves were the conditions for their politicalization. If we adhere to Schmidt’s opinion, “politics” occur from the decisions of the citizens.
In a political system with an Emperor system, “politics” are absolute with the same prerequisites as nature. Here there must be no occurrences from individuals.
In this sense, if wartime war movies want to develop propaganda that follows “national policy” closely, it is more appropriate if they do not contain war objectives or hostility. Without approaching such “politics”, rather simply dying innocently on the battlefield was what was asked of soldiers. And, due to this, through “the individual soldier being magnified to become “the great State”, the soldier becomes a political being.
