たしかにこれまでも、四十九日や一周忌を過ぎてもあえて納骨をせず、家庭内の仏壇にながく骨壺を置きつづける人がいなかったわけではない。ことに、伝統的に小型の骨壺がつかわれてきた関西圏では、そのような方法があまり違和感もなく許容されてきたと言える。しかし、最近にわかにメディアによっても紹介される機会のふえた手元供養の方式は、供養についての考えの根本において、これまでとは大きく異なっている。なぜならそれは、本来なら墓地や納骨堂に納めるべき骨壺を何らかの事情によって自宅に置いておくという消極的な行為ではなく、大切な死者の遺骨をいつまでも身近なところにとどめておくことによって、そこに新しい死者-生者の関係をつくりだそうとする積極的な行為であるからである。
たとえば二〇〇五年七月二日の朝日新聞によると、「大切な人を手元で供養 商品・情報の展示会」の見出しのもとで、手元供養協会主催の展示会の様子が紹介されている。そして、そのような手元供養の形式を受け入れる現代人の志向の変化について、記事は次のように解説する。
遺骨や遺灰で作ったペンダントや遺骨を入れた陶器の置物――。伝統的な家墓や仏壇に代わり、身近に故人をしのぶ「手元供養」が新たな供養方法として登場している。映画化されたヒット小説「世界の中心で、愛をさけぶ」で主人公が恋人の遺灰を持ち続けていたように、背景には遺骨・遺灰に対する考え方の変化があるようだ。

At present, a new form of memorial service for the deceased called “At-hand memorial service” is showing convincing expansion. It is true that, even in the past, there were people who intentionally did not lay the ashes of the deceased to rest after the forty-ninth day after death or the first anniversary of death, instead keeping the urn in the family Buddhist altar for a long time. Therefore, in the Kansai area that has traditionally used smaller urns, it can be said that this method is permitted and that there are no feelings of discomfort towards it. However, recently, all of a sudden, methods for “At-hand memorial” are being more frequently introduced by the media, and the foundation of thoughts on memorials is dramatically different from that of the past. This is not because the urn that should by all rights be placed in a grave or crypt is, for some reason, as a passive action, kept in the home, but it is because by keeping the ashes of the dear departed close, there is an active attempt to create a new relationship between the living and the deceased.
For example, in the July 2nd 2005 edition of The Asahi Shimbun, under the title of “Memorializing the Dear Departed At-hand ? An Exhibition of Information and Products”, an overview of the exhibition held by the Temoto-Kuyo (At-hand memorial) Association was introduced. This article explained the changes in the wishes of modern people who have accepted this form of at-hand memorial service as follows.
Pendants made from the ashes or bones of the deceased or ceramic ornaments that have the remains incorporated ――. Instead of traditional household graves or Buddhist altars, a new form of memorial, an “At-hand memorial” that commemorates the close departed, has come on to the market. Just as the main character of the hit novel “Sekai no Chuushin de Ai wo Sakebu” (“Cry out for Love at the Center of the World) that was made into a film always carried the ashes of his lover around with him, against this backdrop it seems that there are changes in thinking towards the ashes and bones of the deceased.
