With the great merit of being open 24 hours, the library is located in a two-story building in the center of the campus. In the library, as of the end of 2005, there were approximately 50,000 volumes of which 80% are English language publications and 20% are Japanese. Compared to other Japanese university libraries, the number of volumes in itself is not particularly high but as a small-scale university with a library that boasts a range of almost 40,000 English volumes, AIU surely deserves a special mention. The English volumes cover a wide range of fields in general education and volumes concerning Japan Studies satisfy study requirements. The library also possesses numerous audio-visual materials comprising 1,000 CDs, 550 DVDs and 450 cassette tapes.

The library is open-shelved. English volumes are categorized conforming to the US Library of Congress (LC) classification system and Japanese volumes conforming to the Japan Decadal System classification system. Precious books and audio-visual materials are kept in closed shelves and the library staff is always prepared to make these available on request. Staff is always at the reference desk from morning until late at night available for assistance with borrowing or browsing of open and closed shelf materials at any time.

The academic year of AIU is divided into two parts of 15 weeks respectively. Spring Semester, from April to August, and Fall Semester, from September to March. During the Fall Semester, AIU provides an optional Winter Program of 7.5 weeks so that students can catch up on their studies or enhance the quality of their own program of studies. Generally, each course runs for one semester and grades and credits earned by students are based on their study performance over that semester. After the completion of EAP, each student can select the courses they would like to take, using the knowledge gained from EAP program ‘how to choose a course’ information.
In 2005, the EAP Program was held on a different schedule from that of other courses. In the Spring Semester, all levels of the curriculum were held on a 15-week semester basis. After the first half (7.5 weeks) of the Fall Semester, the chance to advance to the next level was given. At this time, for students who had completed the EAP Program, a 15 week Basic Education curriculum was provided comprised of 7.5 week courses in the latter half of the Fall Semester coupled with 7.5 week courses in the Winter Semester.

In 2005, all Liberal Arts and Basic Education courses (Communication Courses, Basic Studies, Global Studies, Japanese Identity)that are imposed as graduation requirements were offered. There are new students in their first semester who must improve their GPA in order to fulfill study abroad requirements but, they are achieving, for the most part, excellent results in the courses that they are taking. The number of students who were commended on the Dean’s List (for students with a GPA of more than 3.60 over a semester, as well as having earned more than 12 credits (limited to courses evaluated by the A ? F system)) sharply increased to 57. While this is a clear improvement in GPA scores, the question is raised as to whether students enrolled in 2005 will fulfill study abroad requirements in the near future. The same can be said for students who have achieved the study abroad requirement of a TOEFL score of 550 and who will progress to the Basic Education course. At present, due to the fact that a comparatively large number of students (38) have not achieved the required TOEFL score, the start of the study abroad program planned for September 2006 has had to be postponed. However, new student TOEFL scores are improving year by year and AIU considers such postponements in study abroad periods as a temporary problem. Problems concerning such study abroad requirements have not caused necessity for any large-scale modifications to the Basic Education curriculum. Basic Education Faculty members engage in teaching while taking into account of the Basic Education curriculum’s role in appropriate preparations for the study abroad program. Furthermore, at present, students who have not managed to attain the required GPA and TOEFL scores for study abroad are receiving special guidance and advice.
From 2005, new students with highly superior grades(high GPA/TOEFL scores or recommendations from their teachers)can start their study abroad much earlier with the Advance Study Abroad Program (ASAP). There are a fair number of 2005 students who are expected to study abroad on this system in 2006.
At the present stage, as far as a judgment can be made, the education standards to which we aspire are being consistently maintained with respect to the Basic Education Curriculum.
